But here’s the thing most guys won’t tell you — the difference between a job that pays and one that bleeds cash isn’t your spray technique. It’s what happens before you ever open a can.
It’s the takeoff.
Miss by 10% on a 2,000-square-foot house and you’re not just wrong. You’re buying paint out of your own pocket. Or worse — you’re the guy who has to call the client mid-job and explain why the number changed.

Why Wall Measurements Go Wrong (Even When You’re Careful)
You’ve measured a thousand rooms. You know the formula — length times width times height. Simple enough.
But here’s where it gets tricky.
That formula gives you total wall area. It doesn’t subtract doors, windows, or that built-in bookcase the homeowner forgot to mention. And it sure doesn’t account for the fact that a 9-foot ceiling in a 12-by-14 room isn’t just 468 square feet of wall.
It’s 468 square feet minus:
- Two 3'0" x 6'8" doors (40 sq ft)
- Three 3' x 5' windows (45 sq ft)
- Baseboards that need a different paint than the walls
- Crown moulding that’ll eat an extra hour per room
Suddenly your “simple” 468 square feet is closer to 380 for the walls, plus 168 for the ceiling, plus 140 linear feet of trim that needs its own prep and paint.
That’s three different numbers. Three different labour calculations. Three different material counts.
And you haven’t even looked at the closet yet.
Ceilings: The Surface Everyone Forgets to Budget Properly
Painters learn this one the hard way.
You bid a job based on wall square footage. You figure the ceiling is just “walls but horizontal.” Then you show up and spend twice as long cutting in because the drywaller left a 3mm gap between the wall and the ceiling.
Ceilings aren’t just walls turned sideways. They’re a different surface with different problems.
Popcorn ceilings drink paint. Smooth ceilings show every imperfection. And cathedral ceilings? Those need scaffolding, not a step ladder. Your production rate drops by 30% or more the moment you’re working above arm’s reach.
A practical approach: measure ceilings separately from walls. Always. Even if you’re spraying both the same colour. The square footage might be identical, but the labour isn’t. A 12-by-14 ceiling is 168 square feet whether it’s flat or vaulted — but one takes 45 minutes and the other takes two hours.
Factor that into your estimate or eat it on the back end.
Trim: The Silent Profit Killer
Baseboards, crown moulding, window casings, door frames. They look small on paper. They’re not.
Here’s a real scenario from a 1,800-square-foot bungalow in Burlington:
- 480 linear feet of baseboard
- 320 linear feet of door and window casing
- 180 linear feet of crown moulding
That’s 980 linear feet of trim. At a production rate of 150 linear feet per hour for a decent painter, you’re looking at 6.5 hours just for trim. Add prep, caulking, and two coats, and you’re at a full day and a half.
But here’s where guys get burned.
They measure the room perimeter for baseboard and forget to subtract the door openings. Or they measure the door casing but forget both sides of the door. Or they count the windows but miss the sills and aprons.
The fix is boring but it works: measure trim separately from walls. Every time. Walk the job with a notepad or a tablet. Count every door, every window, every opening. Note the trim profile — a 5-inch baseboard takes longer to paint than a 3-inch one. Note the condition — stained trim going to white needs more coats than trim that’s already white.
These details are worth hundreds of dollars on a typical house. Thousands on a commercial job.
Doors and Windows: The Subtraction That Trips Everyone Up
Most guys subtract door and window openings from their wall area. That’s standard.
But here’s what gets missed.
You subtract the opening, sure. But you still have to paint the casing. And the door itself. And the door frame. And the window sill. And the window sash if it’s an older wood window.
A standard interior door has about 40 square feet of paintable surface when you count both sides and all four edges. Six-panel doors? More like 50 square feet because of all the detail work. A single door can take 45 minutes to an hour to paint properly.
Now multiply that by 12 doors in a typical house. That’s a full day of labour that some guys forget to charge for.
Same goes for windows. A double-hung window with divided lites isn’t just a subtraction from your wall area. It’s an addition to your trim and detail work. Masking. Cutting in. Cleaning glass afterwards. Each window can add 30-45 minutes to the job.
The Closet Problem
Nobody thinks about closets until they’re standing in one with a brush at 4:30 on a Friday.
Closets are deceptive. Small floor area, but massive wall area relative to their size. A 6-by-3 walk-in closet with 8-foot ceilings has 144 square feet of wall — plus shelving, plus a door, plus all the cutting in around the wire shelving that takes forever.
And most houses have at least four or five of them.
Measure closets separately. Note the shelving. Note whether they’re getting painted the same colour as the adjoining room or something different. Different colour means more cutting in, more time, more cost.
Ceiling Height Changes Everything
A room with 8-foot ceilings is straightforward. A room with 10-foot ceilings is more work but still manageable. A room with 14-foot ceilings or a vaulted ceiling that peaks at 18 feet? That’s a different job entirely.
Your production rate drops as height increases. You’re on a ladder or scaffolding. You’re reaching. You’re moving equipment. You’re taking more breaks because your shoulders are burning.
A good rule of thumb: for every foot above 8 feet, add 10% to your labour estimate for that room. A 12-foot ceiling isn’t just 50% more wall area — it’s 40% more labour per square foot.
And if you need a scaffold? That’s setup and teardown time. That’s equipment rental or depreciation. That’s a line item on your estimate, not something you absorb.
Open Concept: The Deceptive Square Footage
Open concept spaces look easy. Big walls, no corners, just roll and go.
But those big walls often have big windows. And those big windows mean big trim packages. And those open spaces flow into kitchens with cabinets that need masking. And those high ceilings mean you’re on a ladder more than you think.
The square footage might be straightforward, but the masking and prep time can be double what you’d expect for the same area in a compartmentalized house.
Measure the open area. Then measure every interruption in that area. Then estimate your masking time separately from your painting time. It’s the only way to get the number right.
The Canadian Factor
Painting in Canada means dealing with conditions that estimators in warmer climates don’t think about.
Exterior work has an obvious season. But interior work has its own challenges. New construction in winter means houses are closed up tight — ventilation is poor, dry times are longer, and you’re working around other trades who are also trying to finish.
Renovation work in older Canadian homes means dealing with plaster walls, uneven surfaces, and trim that’s been painted eight times since 1952. That’s more prep. More sanding. More primer.
And if you’re measuring for an exterior job, remember that Canadian homes have deeper eaves, bigger porches, and more roof complexity than what you’ll see in standard estimating guides written for the U.S. market.
Measure what’s actually there. Not what the guidebook assumes.
